PENÍNSULA DE NICOYA
NICOYA PENÍNSULA
Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica’s Blue Zone
Being the largest in the country, the Nicoya Peninsula is a favorite up-and-coming travel destination on the Pacific, in the northwest corner of Costa Rica. It is home to Santa Teresa, a famous hotspot located just about 180 kilometers (112 miles) from the country’s capital.
¿Why has Nicoya been named a Blue Zone?
The Nicoya Peninsula is fortunate to be one of the rare five Blue Zones in the world, where residents live exceptionally long and vibrant lives. In these zones, people share key lifestyle habits such as mindful eating and a strong sense of purpose, which benefit their health and well-being. A study published by the National Geographic Society rates the Nicoya Peninsula as one of the places where people have the longest lifespans in the world, together with Okinawa (Japan), Cerdeña (Italy), Icaria (Greece) and Loma Linda (California).
According to the Central American Population Center, this 4,100-kilometer area, populated by 132,000 inhabitants, has 5000 people who are older than 75. Nicoyan men have the highest life expectancy in the world. When they reach the age of 80 they are likely to live 8.2 years longer, and at 90 they can expect 4.4 extra years of healthy life. When it comes to longevity, Costa Rica ranks higher than Japan, the United States and Iceland.
There are different factors which explain why Nicoyans live longer. One key element is related to their eating habits: their diet is natural, based on fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans. In this area, healthy eating is not an obligation; residents simply appreciate what the land has to offer. They also keep a focus on family life and maintain strong social networks. Locals know each other and have time to chat, stay connected, talk about the next crop and enjoy the morning sun. Besides, they find joy in daily physical activity as they walk, ride their bikes or work the land.
